My Role

I worked on the user research, conception, and UI of the platform between Octoberr 2017 and March 2018. I worked alongside User Researcher, Data Scientist, Frontend Engineer and Backend Engineer.

The Challenge

Define and validate the problems which private investors have when investing in cryptocurrencies

Research Phase

Our research phase started with writing various hypothesis and defining the goal for this phase:

"Define and validate the problems
which private investors have when
investing in cryptocurrencies"

We then proceeded to recruit and interview 21 private crypto investors with various years of experience and crypto-affinity. Based on these interviews, we were able to define three user personas:

Definition Phase

After defining the personas, we continued to structure the information and find common themes and pain points that investors mentioned. We defined 18 areas that were repeatedly discussed during the interviews:

Based on the identified problem areas, we came up with the following opportunity areas and "How might we" questions, that later informed the ideation sessions:

The prioratised problem statement was:

"Experienced investors need a set of metrics to identify investment opportunity. Currently, they either find this information in forums, or in closed groups."

Prototyping Phase

Based on the pain points and ideas, we identified two key feature ideas:

I proposed to use a card-sorting exercise to better structure the ideas from the research.

After a round of presentation and feedback, I proceeded to prototyping a first version of the platform.

And after another round of feedback, I continued with visual designs for the global view:

As well as the coin view:

In between design rounds, I organised a card-sorting exercise with our target users to determine a first set of metrics for the MVP:

And started working on the platform view:

Impact

After the launch of the platform studio.glassnode.com in 2018 it slowly gained traction with the release of new metrics. In the first two months from the release the platform had almost 200 monthly users. After four years the user base grew to almost 10.000 monthly users and almost 460k twitter followers, and has an annual revenue of $2.4M.
